Distillation
Distillation is an extremely common analytical method for the
purification or isolation of certain components from their source
material. C Gerhardt provide a wide range of distillation apparatus
for most applications. The traditional distillation equipment
is a slow gentle means of isolating a material for further analysis
or measurement without dilution by heating the sample directly
and condensing the required portion of the sample into a separate
container. This can vary greatly from 20 minutes to hours for
each sample. More modern rapid methods use steam as the heat source.
The only problem with this method for some applications is the
fact that the steam condenses as well as the required substrate
and dilutes it. If water does not interfere with the final analysis
or the dilution can be included in the analysis then distillation
using steam can speed the analysis to around 3 to 4 minutes for
most applications.
C. Gerhardt manufacture the Vapodest steam generating rapid distillation equipment as well as the traditional
heating equipment. The Vapodest has been successfully used on a wide variety of distillation
applications including, Kjeldahl protein, Ammonia, Total Volatile
Nitrogen (TVN), Nitrates, Alcohol, cyanide, sulphide, sulphur
dioxide, phenols, Propionic acid, formaldehyde, sorbic acid, volatile
acidity in wines and pickles, Vicinal diketones (VDK) in beer
hydroxyprolines, fluoride. A wide variety of units are available
with varying degrees of automation to suit the customers specific
requirements.
