The artist August Macke (1887-1914) is one of the leading
lights in the world of twentieth century art. He grew up
in Bonn, fell in love with Elisabeth, the daughter of Carl
Gerhardt, the founder of the company, and married her in
1909. They had two sons, Walter and Wolfgang, and from 1910
to 1914 the family lived in the house next to the company's
premises, the "August Macke Haus" which today
attracts many visitors. In 1912, he painted the picture
"Our garden with flower beds in bloom" in his
garden in which the company building can easily be recognized.
